Difference between Guided Biofilm Therapy and Airflow?

Difference between Guided Biofilm Therapy and Airflow?

4th Oct 2024

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is more comprehensive and superior multistage technique which incorporates Airflow to achieve more optimum results and long term effects. Here’s a detailed comparison between the two:

Definition

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT): GBT is a comprehensive, structured protocol that focuses on the systematic removal of biofilm (the bacterial layer on teeth and gums), and it emphasizes prevention, maintenance, and personalized care. It uses a combination of diagnostic tools and dental equipment, such as the Airflow device, to clean and treat the teeth and gums.
Airflow: Airflow is a specific tool used within the GBT protocol, consisting of a device that uses air, water, and a fine powder (glycine or erythritol) to remove plaque, stains, and biofilm from the tooth surface. It is a non-invasive and gentle method for cleaning teeth.

Procedure

GBT: GBT consists of 8 defined steps:
1. Diagnosis: Assess oral health and identify areas with biofilm.
2. Biofilm Disclosure: A special dye is used to highlight biofilm areas for targeted removal.
3. Information: The patient is educated on their oral hygiene status and the importance of biofilm removal.
4. Airflow: Airflow is used as a key step to remove biofilm from teeth, gums, implants, and other surfaces.
5. Perioflow: If biofilm is present in periodontal pockets, Perioflow is used.
6. Scaling: Ultrasonic or hand instruments are used for any remaining tartar or calculus.
7. Polishing: Teeth are polished for a smooth finish.
8. Recall: The patient’s oral health is monitored, and future care is planned.
Airflow: The Airflow device is used during the cleaning process to remove biofilm and stains. It sprays a mixture of water, air, and powder onto the tooth surface, which gently eliminates plaque and stains without using traditional scaling tools. This procedure can take place as part of a routine cleaning or within the GBT protocol.
