Orthodontics for children and teens in Knightsbridge

Orthodontic treatment is the branch of dentistry that specialises in correcting misaligned teeth and jaws. It uses braces and retainers to move teeth into the desired position to give you a lovely, even smile.

Orthodontic treatment will straighten crooked or misaligned teeth, correct overbites, underbites and cross bites as well as correct protruding teeth.

Teeth straightening can also close unwanted gaps in your teeth as well as space out overcrowded teeth.

By correcting the positioning of your teeth, you will be able to boost your oral health. Teeth are easier to keep clean and free from plaque.

At Serene Dental, we keep a close eye on children’s teeth and watch to see how their adult teeth are coming through. We will only begin teeth straightening treatment once all the adult teeth are through.

Teeth straightening options at Serene Dental

At Serene Dental we offer children and teenagers two options for teeth straightening – Invisalign and traditional fixed braces.

Invisalign

Invisalign is the fantastic new way to straighten teeth with clear, removable aligners. These braces are custom-made to fit your mouth and sit over your teeth like a mouth guard.

They are so discreet that most people won’t know that you’re having your teeth straightened.

Teenagers from Belgravia, Pimlico and throughout West London love the fact that Invisalign is practically invisible!

Invisalign is also a good option if you play a musical instrument or play a contact sport like rugby because you can remove your braces before playing.

Made from a clear plastic, Invisalign works by wearing a set of aligners for a minimum of 20 hours a day.

Every week, you change the set of aligners to the next one in the series. This is to accommodate the slight change of movement in your teeth. You continue in this manner – until you reach the last set of aligners in the series.

Fixed braces

Traditional, fixed braces remain the most effective way to precisely straighten teeth. They may also be the better option if your child or teenager has a severe or complex orthodontic need.

As well as straightening crooked teeth, fixed braces will also space out crowded teeth, close unwanted gaps, move protruding teeth and correct bite problems.

Made up from square metal brackets which are fixed to the teeth, a metal wire is threaded through the brackets which helps guide the teeth into their correct position. As the name suggests, fixed braces remain on the teeth until the end of your treatment.

Orthodontics for Children and Teens FAQ's

How do I know which is better for my child – fixed braces or Invisalign?

You will need to think about a range of issues such as the severity of your child’s orthodontic need, cost and lifestyle. Do they play a musical instrument? Do they play a contact sport? If so, Invisalign may suit them better. Many children and teenagers wear braces, would your child mind wearing fixed braces or if it will affect their self-confidence? We invite you to a free consultation to discuss these options and more with Dr. Safa.

What happens if my child loses an Invisalign aligner?

This does happen occasionally. It is best to call us as soon as you can, and we can advise whether it is best to move on to the next set in the series or revert to the previous set. For this reason, we recommend not throwing away any of your Invisalign aligners until treatment has finished.

How long does it take to get teeth straightened?

This will depend on several factors, including the severity of the orthodontic case and whether the user is following the treatment as advised I.E. wearing their Invisalign aligners for the recommended minimum of 20 hours a day. In most cases, children and teenagers will complete teeth straightening in about a year. Fixed braces can sometimes take longer.
