Serene Dental in Knightsbridge is a family friendly dental practice. Our supportive team makes young children, teens as well as adults feel welcome.

We passionately believe that helping children take care of their teeth when they are young and starting them with good oral hygiene habits will give them a good foundation for building and keeping strong, healthy teeth and gums well into adulthood.

Our children’s dentist sees young patients from Belgravia, Pimlico, Knightsbridge and throughout West London. We are open until 6pm every weekday and until 2pm on Saturday, so it’s easy to get an appointment outside of school hours.

Dental treatment for children through the years

It’s important to get your children used to the sights, smells and what happens at the dentist early on and for this reason, we encourage you to bring your babies and young children with you when you see the dentist.

Six to twelve months

We recommend that you bring your child for their first dental appointment within six months of them cutting their first tooth.

This usually begins to happen from the age of six months.

Once children begin to get their baby teeth, you will need to help them with brushing their teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on their diet and sugar intake at this time too.

Limit sweets and sugary foods to the occasional treat and be careful about the amount of fruit juice and squash that they have.

Fizzy drinks are the worst offenders for teeth and should be limited.

Helping your child to care for their baby teeth is important because their teeth not only help them to eat and chew, but it also affects their speech, facial appearance and will provide the foundations for strong adult teeth too.

Age five to seven

At this age, your child will begin to get their first adult teeth. They will need to have regular check-ups every six months.

Age seven is when we recommend that children can brush their teeth independently and not need as much supervision.

We offer fissure sealants for children which helps to protect the teeth from decay. Fissures are the grooves which are found on the back teeth where we chew food.

Sometimes a toothbrush will not get deep enough into the grooves, meaning that food can get trapped, allowing bacteria to develop and result in tooth decay.

Fissure sealants is a clear liquid which is painted directly on to the teeth preventing food and bacteria forming in the grooves of the teeth.

This is a fast and painless treatment which is commonly used in children to prevent tooth decay.

Age nine to age 13

At this stage, children will gradually lose their baby teeth and have them replaced with adult teeth.

We monitor children of this age for potential orthodontic treatment. We watch to see the position of how the adult teeth grow and check the growth of the jaw for any issues.

Not all children will need to have orthodontic treatment, but we monitor and can make recommendations.

Children’s orthodontic treatment does not usually start until your child has all their adult teeth in place. This may mean that some children start wearing braces at around the age of 11 whilst others wait until they are 14 or 15.

If children or teenagers develop cavities in their baby or adult teeth, they will need to get a filling to prevent pain or infection.

At Serene Dental, we offer white fillings which blend in with the natural colour of your child’s teeth so that they are inconspicuous in their mouth.

Also at this stage, we recommend that children start to see a dental hygienist who can advise on the best way to keep teeth, gums and mouth clean.

My child has a dummy, is this bad for his teeth?

We understand that many children have a dummy or may suck their thumbs and that this provides comfort. We recommend trying to break the habit around the age of three. After this age it can impact the development of teeth and the structure of the mouth. If a child still has a dummy at the age of six or seven, then this can lead to a gap between the front teeth causing a problem with their bite.

What is the best toothpaste for my child?

The most important thing is to choose a toothpaste that has fluoride. We recommend that up to the age of three years you should use a toothpaste with no less than 1000ppm fluoride. For ages three to six use a toothpaste that has more than 1000ppm fluoride. For children aged seven and over, you should use a toothpaste that has 1350-1500ppm fluoride.

What can I do to prevent cavities developing in my child’s teeth?

Give your child a balanced diet and be careful about limiting the amount of sugar they can have. Use a fluoride toothpaste at home and ensure that they are brushing their teeth properly twice a day. Visit your dentist every six months and talk to your child’s dentist about fissure sealant treatment if you are concerned.
